Titles versus Names

I learn so much copyediting dissertations, but not always what the author thinks I'll learn. Today, I learned that Dalai Lama is a title—and so, in the bibliography, we added the Dalai Lama's name in square brackets after "Dalai Lama," which is the name under which he is published.
